About Us

Blackburn, Victoria, 3130

Established in 1964 on a large site bordering the environmentally significant Blacks Walk, Laburnum is the largest Primary School in the Whitehorse Network.  With an average prep intake of 120 students over the past four years, Laburnum is also one of the fastest growing schools in the Eastern Metropolitan Region.
Subsequent to this growth, the facilities at Laburnum have improved considerably over the past five years, including the installation of eight new portable classrooms, the refurbishment of the Performing Arts Centre, extensive improvements to the school’s gardens, the building of a second prep playground area, and the erection of three large shade structures over targeted play areas.

Following a major upgrade in 2003, Laburnum has outstanding facilities, including 16 permanent classrooms, 18 relocatable classrooms, a large modern art room, a large well equipped library, a dedicated Languages Other Than English (LOTE) room, an expansive Performing Arts Centre, a basketball stadium size hall with a large stage area, a dedicated After School Hours Child Care Program facility, and expansive grounds incorporating three separate children’s playground structures, an oval, two asphalt basketball / netball courts, and a Kitchen Garden.

Laburnum Primary School strongly promotes the values of;

  • Integrity: Where all members of the school community are encouraged to be trustworthy, honest to each other, and to be fair to everyone.

  • Respect: Where all members of the school community are encouraged care about themselves, others and the environment, and to treat everyone with tolerance, acceptance and understanding.

  • Responsibility: Where all members of the school community are encouraged to be accountable for their actions and words, and to actively contribute to our school.

  • Passion & Optimism: Where all members of the school community are encouraged to be confident, positive, persistent and resilient, and to strive for their personal best.

These values underpin all aspects of our school culture, including the delivery of an inclusive and sequential curriculum program in English, Mathematics, LOTE (Italian), The Arts (Performing and Visual), Environmental Education, Health and Physical Education, Technology and Science, and ICT.  In addition, we provide specialist programs in the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, LOTE (Italian), Reading Recovery, Literacy Intervention, English as a Second Language, and Library.

The Inquiry based Integrated Curriculum approach is central to curriculum planning and development, with a variety of inquiry-based strategies used to deliver school programs.  The implementation of Inquiry based learning, with a focus on questioning, thinking and research skills, aims to have students take more responsibility for their learning, reflection and goal setting.

Laburnum recognises the importance of supporting students’ individual needs. In 2010, the school will offer a broad range of programs including Reading Recovery and literacy support programs. In addition, the school will offer programs in: Choir, Band, Instrument Tuition, Swimming, Vacation Care, Out of Hours Child Care, Kindergarten to Prep transition, Life Education, House Sports, Inter-school sporting competitions, Christian Religious Education, Camps and Excursions, Safety House, Junior School Council, and excellent Parent Education Programs.

Laburnum also recognises the importance of nurturing students’ leadership skills, and subsequently provides a number and range of leadership opportunities including School Captains and Vice Captains, House Captains and Vice Captains, and leadership positions with the choir, band, library, Environment Committee (the Green Team) and sports teams.  The Junior School Council and Level 4-Prep Buddy Program also provide valuable experiences in this area.

A highly qualified, experienced and caring staff plans and delivers class programs that recognize and cater to the differing capabilities and learning styles of students.   The concept of ‘value added’ in relation to extending children to the best of their abilities remains a priority for teaching staff.  A high priority is also placed on Professional Development, ensuring that teachers are conversant with best teaching practices and developmental learning.

Laburnum has a valued reputation for offering high standards of excellence in education – as evidenced by the level of parent satisfaction which continues to reflect a very positive parent attitude towards the school.   Laburnum both enjoys and very much appreciates this high level of community satisfaction and support, with parental involvement and participation being encouraged across all aspects of our school program.

It is this very real sense of community that makes Laburnum an excellent school for students, parents and teachers alike.
